“I have no prior ballet training. We jumped right in at the barre and the teacher didn’t even explain the ballet positions.”
You’ve always wanted to do ballet ever since you were little.
But your parents thought you were “too big” and put you in tap or jazz instead. Or they just weren’t able to afford it.
Fast forward to today and you are no longer so little but the dream of doing ballet is still with you.
You might’ve had kids, a family, a career, or trained in other activities and feel that you would be out of place in a ballet class.
Maybe you’d be the oldest, least fit, or most inexperienced compared to the younger and more traditionally “ballet-looking” dancers in class.
But you’ve built up the courage to finally go to an adult ballet class!
There were limited options near you but you still found a studio that offered a beginner class and made sure it was suitable for someone with no experience.
You show up and a few minutes into class the worst-case scenario unfolds. The teacher doesn’t teach basic positions, barre etiquette, or start with simple movements.
You are instantly lost.
Your heart sinks. Just showing up was hard enough already.
What if you could show up to any beginner class confident that you knew the basic movements, the vocabulary, and the etiquette?
You could continue struggling and hating every minute of class until you eventually start to pick up the movements, terminology, and etiquette.
You could also try to find another adult class that caters more to absolute beginners but it might not be as closeby or convenient to get to.
What if you could skip months of discouragement or a frustrating search and become studio-ready with a structured program from the convenience of your home?
And learn it from a teacher who takes adults seriously and gives explanations?
That is exactly what you’ll get with the Sticky Buns course.
I went to my first in-person ballet class and it was SO FUN!! I met some
other beginners, tried quarter-pirouettes for the first time, and got to
dance on a real floor with an actual barre and giant mirror 🥰 I would never
have had the confidence to try it before. Thank you so much for opening the
door for me!

What Absolute Beginners Need to Know
Many beginner ballet classes assume a certain level of pre-existing knowledge.
The teacher may have been a professional dancer and just doesn’t remember having had to learn the super-super basics.
Or there are other students who are more advanced and the compromise is to meet in the middle but that doesn’t help you.
You can save yourself months of discouragement and frustration and just show up to class confident that you can follow along.
Learn all the basics you need to know and more with Sticky Buns:
what to wear (shoes, leotards, tights, skirts, etc.)
what the different words mean
how classes are structured and flow
basic arm movements
basic leg movements
basic turns and combinations
how the barre and center work
why you face different directions
the order of exercises in class
5 weeks of beginner class you can take at home
a taste of beyond beginner exercises

Tie It All Together with a Variation
Ballet classes often move too quickly and can be overwhelming.
Just knowing the vocabulary and basic movements may not give you all the confidence you need.
But being able to do a simple variation, however imperfectly, will give you the assurance that you know the basics.
You’ll get instructions for 2 basic variations:
Sugar Plum Fairy
Nutcracker Prince
Each is traditionally for a specific gender but you can do either or both!
By applying what I’ve learned with Broche Ballet I’ve been able to improve
my dancing in-studio by leaps and bounds!

Understand What Your Teacher is Teaching
Everybody expects a little child to know absolutely nothing and so child beginner classes start with basics like:
how do you stand?
how do you put your hand on the barre?
how do you point your foot?
what do you do in center?
what is center?
how far apart is second position?
But adult beginner classes launch you right into Plies and Tendus as if simply learning the word will give you an understanding of how it should be done.
Sticky Buns starts at the very beginning and leaves no stone unturned.
We include glossaries, vocabulary checklists, and body position guides to supplement the course videos to help solidify and reinforce the concepts you are learning.

What to Ask When You Call the Studio
Imagine you call your local studio in advance about the beginner class they offer. This studio might even have a great reputation for welcoming beginners.
They assure you that it would be suitable for someone like you.
You show up early, you’re nervous but excited to finally be doing this.
Within a few minutes or a few corrections, you realize that class is moving too quickly and you are already lost.
In some cases, the teacher might even ask you to leave. It sounds cruel but it has happened before.
And the worse part is that they told you to come!
We want you to have a successful first class experience so we’ve included a call or email script with the questions you need to ask to accurately understand what kind of beginner class your studio offers.

The classes here helped me a lot for technique - so I can follow better in group classes
I have learned more from you than I learned in company and even the professional classes I have taken. I learned to do, not the why, and many times not the nuts and bolts. And the site you have created is so vast. I watch all the time and don't begin to scratch the surface! You have invested so much in your teaching. It shows. And it is a precious gift.
I've received more helpful tips and techniques in Broche Ballet classes than I have in the adult open in-studio classes I've attended. Julie always makes the classes fun, interesting, and inspiring. Her ballet classes always leave me in a better mood and are a bright spot in my day!
I am so glad that I found you! What a blessing to be instructed by such a caring, passionate, smart, and awesome teacher. You are a jewel. All of your classes are so very good. There are so so many! Thank you for being available and sharing your gift of dance with all of us.

You have so many fantastic teaching points, specific to adult ballet dancers. I'm almost to my 4yr mark with ballet. You have clarified so many technique questions. I really love having all of the classes on videos and your music choices are amazing. Honestly, I think you should write a book of helpful hints or better understanding ballet as an adult. You never make us feel like we're late starters. Thank you for sharing your gift of dance! 🩰
I had some skepticism that Broche Ballet would not have anything new, that wasn't already covered for free on YouTube by people like Kathryn Morgan, Claudia Dean, or other popular ballet channels. Even though I've only done a tiny fraction of the Broche Ballet content, it had things I didn't see other places.
I took my mixed level adult studio class yesterday and was feeling a bit discouraged by how little time there is for breakdowns and attention to details. I then decided to practice the Petit Battment and Arabesque Technique Barres this morning on demand, and got such a deep felt sense of how to work with these concepts in my body!

I'm French, living in France, I have access to so many ballet classes. But yours are my favorites. Love how you teach, your energy, your kindness. I progress the most with you. I feel the best when I practice with you
Julie is such an amazing teacher who makes ballet so enjoyable too. Everything is explained so well ... and the vibe is always uplifting and encouraging.
You are an AMAZING teacher. You have helped me so much and the attention you give to small details is more than I can get in my studio classes. You have a gift for teaching!
I also just want to say a huge thank you! Having the ability to go en pointe means so much to me and I'm finally accomplishing that! Also your website is literally so good. So so good.
You have so many options, great tips, and explain things in such a way you cannot usually get in a studio.
When I tell people in my in-person studio classes that I am also learning on-line, they sort of smile politely and perhaps skeptically. They don't realize that most of my progress is coming from Broche, not from my studio class!
You have been such an invaluable resource as I come back to dance after 15+ years and your adult-centric pedagogy has helped the form feel that much more inclusive for people like me. Your love of ballet shines through the expansive wealth of resources you share with your students. I just wanted to say thank you so much for making ballet more accessible!
The regular adults Silver Swan classes (for 50+ years) were not providing enough technical detail for me and I was receiving no corrections as the focus, during those classes was mainly on 'keeping fit' and having fun rather than improving classical ballet technique. Then I found Broche at the start of this year and haven't looked back! I am LOVING Broche. No-one else teaches in the way you do Julie.
Practicing at home has absolutely improved my in-studio dancing. When I do an extra barre class from home, my teacher has noticed my technique is better maintained week to week and has helped me improve over time.
One of the things I am most proud of accomplishing thanks to Broche Ballet is going en pointe! This was not something I thought I could do as an adult, and I am so excited to have achieved this dream!
You created a place where I can do ballet with my broken body and extra weight after cancer treatment. And be happy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Too old for what? To be a teenager again? Probably ;)
But to get more flexible, to get stronger, to learn true classical ballet technique, to perform on stage, to bring joy and purpose to your life through ballet, to join a community of passionate like minded grown-up dancers? Probably not.
We’re right here, doing all of that (and more) every day!
As long as you have the all-clear from your doctor, ballet will help you reach your fitness goals in a gentle and fun way.
The movements are generally low impact and will help you improve your strength and flexibility in a fun and motivating environment to keep you coming back for more.
The best part of getting in shape via ballet is how addicting it is — once you fall in love with ballet, it’s easy to keep showing up and putting in the work!
Every day here at Broche, we watch our adult ballet dancers go en pointe, land pirouettes, get their legs higher, and learn to dance gracefully.
You can use all kinds of things!
Step ladder
Chair (preferably one with 4 legs, not a spinning office chair, but hey we’ve seen it done with a swiveling chair!)

If you do invest in a barre, our favorite brand is Vita Barre.
To find the length of barre that you need, stand in one place and tendu (place your toe) in front of you. Then tendu (place your toe) in the back. Measure the distance between your toe in the front and the back. If you have the space, add 1 foot to that. Otherwise, that will be a sufficient length.
Our program is online and can be accessed on most devices connected to the internet, including tablets, phones, and computers.
You can also AirPlay or cast to your TV if you prefer to take classes on a larger screen.
